Helene Hawthorne is a business name of Kristine Hawthorne, apparel and fashion designer. Exclusive interview with Helen taken by Nina Pak for Miroir Magazine.
Q: Tell me something about your history as a designer. Did you have a formal education or are you self taught?
A: My grandma taught me how to sew.
Q: Where did the name Helene come from and why do you use this for your business rather than Kristine?
A: Helene was my Grandma’s name.
Q: Was there a particular person in your past that nurtured your creative instincts, like an artist, or a teacher, or mentor of some kind?
A: Well my Grandma, of course, and also my parents.
Q: Where does your creative process begin?
A: With a really great piece of fabric.
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: Everywhere, my head, internet, music, nature, inspiration is everywhere.
Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: Coffee, play with kitty, sew for a few hours, play with kitty again and repeat until bed time.
Q: If you could do any project or make any garments with full support and no limits, what would your dream creation be?
A: I’d do elaborate Marie Antoinette style gowns loaded with hand embroidery and made from antique silk and lace.
Q: If you do collaborative projects with others, can you speak about how this interaction with fellow collaborators works for you?
A: Every one of them is different. I like working with such a variety of people and different styles.
Q: What would you hope to accomplish in the next few years?
A: I’m not sure – I think I’m pretty happy with where I’m at. Maybe start selling on my own website in addition to the etsy shop I already have.
