Q: How long have you been an artist? Please tell us a little about your chosen medium.

A: I would say I officially started showing my work as a professional artist about 4 or 5 years ago. I paint with acrylic paint on wood panel. I like the smooth surface of wood panels, which allows for more detailed work through a lot of layering and blending.

Q: Have you been trained, and if so from what institution? Or are you self taught?

A: I am self taught. I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, however majored in apparel design. It wasn’t until a little later in my life I decided to paint.

Marion Peck was born in the Philippines, while her family was on a trip around the world. She grew up in Seattle, Washington. Receiving her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 1985, she then studied in two different MFA programs, Syracuse University in New York and Temple University in Rome. In 2009, Marion married her long-time partner, the artist Mark Ryden and they have recently relocated from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon.

In the world of Pop Surrealism, Marion Peck and Mark Ryden are in the forefront of the lowbrow art movement which started in the 1970s. True soulmates who inspire each other in the creation of their own very recognizable dreamworld.

Their paintings contain a mixture of delightful, sometimes naughty figures, anthropomorphic characters, and cultural icons, which capture the zeitgeist of this artistic genre. They have intrigued and inspired a growing list of very prominent admirers, collectors, and fans. As well as other painters who have followed in the wake of this movement. Marion Peck has been very prolific in recent years and we are grateful to have the opportunity to feature her in this issue of Miroir.

Q: Tell us a little about your method and how you came to favor this medium.

A: I am currently exploring and enjoying acrylic paint as my medium. I have been painting for 3 years, and using acrylic for about 6 months. When I first began to make art about 5 years ago – I feared paint and it scared me away. more » “Interview with Artist Abby Fields”

Q: How long have you been painting, and what made you choose the water theme?

A: Water has been present in my paintings for many years, but never as an active element of the story. It became a foreground theme with a painting of a little sea goddess “Aphrodite with a Kitten” for “My Parallel Lives” series in 2013. For the Haunted series I wanted images that didn’t look like a typical ghost image, I wanted something that was beautiful with an edge of a nightmare quality, like you would see in a film like the Ring.
I took the photographs we made at the abandoned warehouse, the old rail station and the graveyard and overlaid them with photos I had taken underwater. The water images have an ethereal feeling to them and when mixed with the headshots I got an image that looked distorted in an interesting way. They remind me a little of the mirrors from an amusement park, or a surreal dream. There was a lot of experimenting with these images for Specter and at least half of them did not make the cut.

Caitlin Fisher did a wonderful job with the pale makeup and smoky eyes on Alanna and Jacqueline, but I also added quite a lot to the images in post production to change the tone of the skin and add color in places. This is a process much like painting, only I use digital brushes on layers, and some painterly applications.
