I believe that each of us do, regardless of our career has a responsibility for the environment. Some artists, the ones that are in the limelight, would carry the message more easily, and be influential to others more so, and should. However, I also wonder how irreversible it all is at this point, and how, as humans, we’re here as another piece of this puzzle and meant to be as we are.
There is a four-hundred-acre plot of woods bordering our land that I get to hike, and it’s fundamentally the highlight of my daily life. There is so much wonder in a single acre of land, and I get to explore all of that. It has been the best gift, and I’m ever grateful for it. I have come to know those acres and I see the same animals over the years; deer families, box turtles, blue herons, and have since given most of them names. A fox often visits our yard that I call Saint Winifred Neko Chase Kitsune Reynardine. (I couldn’t settle on one name.) The Gods that inhabit my landscapes are spiritual beings, aware of their connection with universal energy, they are awake. Entities of light, they play with it, and float among the stars. They defy the laws of gravity, they appear as if in a dream, or deep meditation, astral travel traveling in a psychedelic or Shamanic experience. They are there to show us something. Something that is worth pointing out no matter how irrelevant it may seem.
The narrative portraits of Sara Scribner weave flora and fauna with realism to create paintings that have a timeless quality. The subjects of Sara’s paintings are often women that appear to have a powerful connection to their surroundings. They are woven into a wilderness or dreamscape that uses flowers and animals to add a fanciful quality to the paintings. Traveling the world through books, sifting through stories, I find myths and folktales that use flora and fauna in their allegories. An artist’s only responsibility is to be interesting. The underlying theme of all my work is the relationship between Nature and culture, the push and pull they have on the individual, and how we try to reconcile them. I feel there is beauty to be found in just about every environment, what I might use for a particular painting is one which I feel serves the story I am trying to tell.
Aron Wiesenfeld‘s vast landscapes with a solitary figure evoke empathy from the viewer, the figures often appear lonely, melancholy, somber. There is a quality of suspense as well, as if they tug on a part of our past, something not quite remembered. They evoke the sort of memory’s we have when waking from a dream which you can’t quite recall, you still have the feeling of it, but not the whole meaning, you’re left with the impression of it, the longing, the vulnerable epiphany that the dream was trying to evoke. Aron is a master of the understated, he leaves us hints, makes us wonder about the story. His exquisite detail work draws us close until we feel as if we could walk into his worlds.
