Interview with the Artist R.L. Marlett

Wasteland

Q: Tell us about your art and what inspired you to photograph a dystopian future?

A: I am a fan of the Mad Max / Post Apocalyptic / Dystopian genre. The series of images displayed here were taken at the Wasteland Weekend 2018 event in the Mojave Desert. What inspired me to shoot this event is the resourcefulness, creativity, and originality on display. What I found, that I was not looking for, was some hidden humanity in the candids I shot.

Q: Tell us about Wasteland Weekend, is this an annual event?

A: Wasteland Weekend started as an informal gathering of fans, in the desert, of the Mad Max series of films.

Interview with the Artist Ashley Joncas

Q: Tell us about your art and what inspired you to produce imagery about futuristic, science fiction or fantasy themes.

A: Much of my art is inspired by my constant need to visually escape reality, so I use a lot of futuristic elements that don’t exist to infiltrate the images I create. I’m constantly fascinated by technology, it’s relationship with us, and how to use it in alternative ways.

Title: Utopia
Photography and post editing by Nina Pak
Models: Chantell Holmes, Jessica Dawn, Jessica Oryall, Lidia Pamies Ruan

I don’t like to think of our future in terms of entropy, of course everything comes to an end eventually, I’d just like to see it thrive first, truly blossom into something wonderful, a tangible utopia, not just a figment of our hopeful dreams.
Although I have explored the genre of the dystopian Steampunk fashion for several editorials in the past, for this FUTURISTE theme in Miroir I wanted something with more of a flavor of optimism rather than ruin.
I grew up with the Jetsons, and then Star Trek and Star Wars, I had a different idea in my mind for what my future would be and it looks nothing like what we’ve got.
