It’s nice to think of art as something that lasts. Paintings get preserved and passed through generations. Maybe, in enough time, they end up at a museum. But for street artists and muralists, this often isn’t the case.

Haunted by Nina Pak

For the Haunted series I wanted images that didn’t look like a typical ghost image, I wanted something that was beautiful with an edge of a nightmare quality, like you would see in a film like the Ring.
I took the photographs we made at the abandoned warehouse, the old rail station and the graveyard and overlaid them with photos I had taken underwater. The water images have an ethereal feeling to them and when mixed with the headshots I got an image that looked distorted in an interesting way. They remind me a little of the mirrors from an amusement park, or a surreal dream. There was a lot of experimenting with these images for Specter and at least half of them did not make the cut.
Caitlin Fisher did a wonderful job with the pale makeup and smoky eyes on Alanna and Jacqueline, but I also added quite a lot to the images in post production to change the tone of the skin and add color in places. This is a process much like painting, only I use digital brushes on layers, and some painterly applications.

I picked up my first camera at age 14 so I could photograph the fall colors in Ontario. Since that time I have been most inspired by the natural landscape. Once I moved to Vancouver Island I knew I had found my home, my favorite place being that area where land meets ocean. About 10 years ago I also began to photograph nudes in the landscape, primarily the west coast rainforest. I never cease to feel wonder when in these beautiful places.

Q: How long have you been an artist? Please tell us a little about your chosen medium.
A: I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. There was a moment where I thought I’d be a good meteorologist, but I ultimately stuck with art as my career.
I work in a variety of different media, but the glue of it all is the digital workspace. It appealed to me when I was young, in part, because it was a new frontier. Digitally generated or manipulated art continues to be controversial because it doesn’t yet have the deep, historic roots that older mediums have.
Q: Have you been trained, and if so from what institution? Or are you self taught?
A: I spent some time at tiny, now abandoned, art school named White Pines and then finished up my degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology focused on Commercial Photography. I gained allot of technical knowledge there about film photography that was already becoming irrelevant career-wise, but was useful as a foundation for photography. As far as Photoshop goes, I’m self taught.

In my photography there is death, darkness, weirdness and elements of mysticism.
Q: How long have you been an artist? Please tell us a little about your chosen medium.
A: I have started to take photos about ten years ago. I discovered photography then and nearly at once I realized this is it-the best medium that will allow me to express myself.
Q: Have you been trained, and if so from what institution? Or are you self taught?
A: I’ve finished art studies but as a photographer I’m self-taught.
