Haunted by Nina Pak

by Nina Pak
For the Haunted series I wanted images that didn’t look like a typical ghost image, I wanted something that was beautiful with an edge of a nightmare quality, like you would see in a film like the Ring.
I took the photographs we made at the abandoned warehouse, the old rail station and the graveyard and overlaid them with photos I had taken underwater. The water images have an ethereal feeling to them and when mixed with the headshots I got an image that looked distorted in an interesting way. They remind me a little of the mirrors from an amusement park, or a surreal dream. There was a lot of experimenting with these images for Specter and at least half of them did not make the cut.

Caitlin Fisher did a wonderful job with the pale makeup and smoky eyes on Alanna and Jacqueline, but I also added quite a lot to the images in post production to change the tone of the skin and add color in places. This is a process much like painting, only I use digital brushes on layers, and some painterly applications.

Interview with the Artist Andy Kehoe

The artist should not only paint what he sees before him, but also what he sees
in himself. – Caspar David Friedrich, 19th-century German Romantic painter

Uninhibited by any sense of natural order, Kehoe is known for his mixed-media work of human-animal hybrids set in forested backgrounds. Greatly inspired by the Romanticism movement of the 19th century and their emphasis on individuality, emotion, and drama, Kehoe has a similar intuition when creating otherworldly landscapes. With a focus on imagination and emotional response as the source of aesthetic experience, his fantastical imagery evokes a sense of wonderment by emphasizing the grandeur of nature.

Interview with the Photographer Dave Aharonian

I picked up my first camera at age 14 so I could photograph the fall colors in Ontario. Since that time I have been most inspired by the natural landscape. Once I moved to Vancouver Island I knew I had found my home, my favorite place being that area where land meets ocean. About 10 years ago I also began to photograph nudes in the landscape, primarily the west coast rainforest. I never cease to feel wonder when in these beautiful places.

Interview with the Artist Cunene

Q: How long have you been an artist? Please tell us a little about your chosen medium, what got you started as a photographer? Do you do any other creative arts?

A: Drawing has always been my favorite child-play, I’ve always spent my free time creating, manipulating, sewing, making costumes and accessories. I began casually to take photos, first of myself, after that of some friends of mine, then in 2009 I started to portrait young women all around Italy, where I live in, mixing photography and digital art, combining reality and my imagination. more » “Interview with the Artist Cunene”

In his latest show, Passing Time (opening February 2 at La Luz de Jesus Gallery), Dan Barry has assembled pieces whose themes are simultaneously intensely personal and universal: mortality, loss, connection, family.

The show found its genesis in a tumultuous year in Dan’s life, one which saw the loss of his father and of his partner’s mother, as well as age- and health-related transitions for Dan’s mother. more » “Dan Barry: Passing Time and Making a History of Marks.”
